Dawson Co. girl dies while car-surfing

She was a “very, very smart” girl that apparently made a very bad decision.

A 16-year-old from Dawson County is dead after car-surfing on her friend’s vehicle Monday night.

Anna Hawkins, of Dawsonville, was thrown off the top of the vehicle after her friend lost control while they were rounding a curve on Couch Road.

"The vehicle attempted to negotiate the curve, lost control, struck an embankment and at the time the driver lost control, the young lady on top of the vehicle got ejected and hit the roadway," said Georgia State Patrol Trooper Steve Thompson.

Family members can’t believe the disciplined student would try something so dangerous.

"She was very, very smart. Her SAT scores were very high. She was probably going to get a full-ride scholarship to a college," said her aunt Lynn Burn. "Anna was a beautiful child. She was at the top of her class. She was a star soccer player. She was voted most valuable player on her soccer team.”

Authorities are still talking to the driver, who could face charges.

But apparently car-surfing is becoming a serious and dangerous trend with local teenagers.

Last month in Gwinnett County, three young people were on the car when the driver stopped suddenly and two of them hit the ground hard and were badly injured.

"When I see it on YouTube, I cannot emphasize enough how dangerous this is. I beg the teenagers, please stay inside the vehicle and wear their seat belts," said Thompson.
