A Good Dilemma

By Chris Schiavone

No one ever likes a dilemma. Unless you are the Atlanta Braves and your dilemma is who do you start on Wednesday’s game in Arizona?

The bad news is that Brandon Beachy was placed on the 15-day Disabled List with a strained left oblique muscle that he injured during his one at bat in Friday’s game. (Beachy 1-1, 3.45 ERA 46K’s).

So who should start on Wednesday? Rodrigo Lopez? Mike Minor? Julio Teheran?

All three are good great candidates, and here is why.

Rodrigo Lopez is a 35 years old veteran who has spent some time in the big leagues.

Lopez has seven starts in Gwinnett and is posting a 5-0 record with a 1.79 ERA 1 HR 13 BB and 36 K’s. His last start went seven scoreless innings giving up just three hits and striking out seven.

Next we have Mike Minor. Minor at Gwinnett is 2-1 in seven starts with a 2-1 record 2.22 ERA 5HR 14BB and 46K’s.

Minor did not have a successful spot start earlier in the year at Milwaukee (4.1 IP 7H 5ER). But we all know he has the potential. Just ask the Cubs, when he set down 12 batters in a 16-5 route by Atlanta in 2010.

Or it could be the rookie, Julio Teheran, one of the top prospects in all of baseball.  Teheran in six starts at Gwinnett has a 3-0 record with a 1.91 ERA, giving up no homeruns and striking out 32.   Teheran has already been thrown into the fire against the Phillies on May 7th.  Nothing flashy but got the job done (4.2 IP 4H 3ER).  Minor pitched Sunday afternoon for Gwinnett and threw 90 pitches, so go ahead and rule him out

Lopez although has the experience over the other two pitchers, is not on the 40-man roster and if they use him, and send him back down, they risk losing him to waivers.

Braves manager, Fredi Gonzalez, told WSB that the announcement would be made Monday on who will start. But all signs point towards Julio Teheran to make his second big league start at the age of 20.

Either way, as of Saturday, the three aces of Gwinnett have a combined record of 10-1 with an ERA of  1.97  and have set down 117 batters on strikes.

Not a bad dilemma for Frank Wren.
