It was more like labor than a win

UGA vs. Kentucky
Mark Cornelison
Georgia Bulldogs running back Todd Gurley (3) was bottled up by the Kentucky defense.

On November 21, 1985, our middle son, Chris, was born.  We thought it was going to be on November 21.

We waited and waited that night for him to arrive, and after a long and tough battle (all waged by my wife), he finally arrived.  I think she was in labor for something, like, 18 hours.

I tell you this because watching the Dawgs play at Kentucky was like waiting for Chris to be born.

We kept waiting and waiting for something to happen, and like the night Chris arrived, it took quite a while and was quite a battle.

The Dawgs won the toss and deferred.  Kentucky got the ball and scored.  I think it was the first time the Cats scored in the first quarter since Adolph Rupp was the men’s head basketball coach (actually it was 20 games ago).

So like, just like in the delivery room that night, we waited for something to happen.  And we waited almost the entire first quarter.  Finally our wait was over, as Aaron Murray hit Tavarres King with a 66 yard touchdown pass, and we were tied at seven.

But then Kentucky marched 58 yards in nine plays to go up 14-7.  I think it was the first time the Cats had scored 14 points in the first half since Bear Bryant was their head coach back in 1953.

So, like that night in the delivery room, we had to wait again.  But, ah ha!  Murray to the rescue!  An 8 play, 75 yard drive and again a touchdown to King.  Okay, now we are cooking!  But, Marshall Morgan missed the point-after.  Time to wait.  Again.

Finally right at the end of the half, Morgan pin-balled a 27 yard field goal though the uprights and the Dawgs were up 16-14 at the half.

We though the wait was over.  Surely, the Dawgs would come out of the dressing room, get the second half kickoff and put an end to this night.  But it was a three and out for the Dawgs’ offense.  Kentucky gets the ball and THEY SCORED.  So again the wait was on.

Could we win?  Could we pull this out?  When would this ever end?

Needless to say, you know how both stories end.

Tony and Lois Schiavone, after a long night of fighting and pushing and sweating and even some cursing, welcomed Chris into the world, and like our other four children, he has been a joy.

The Georgia Bulldogs after a long night of fighting and pushing and sweating and (I’m sure at times) even some cursing, dispatched of Kentucky 29-25.  And now they still have a shot to win the SEC East.

After the ordeal with Chris, I asked my wife how she felt.  “I don’t want to go through anything like that again,” she said.

I’m sure Coach Mark Richt felt the same way.
