Okay, am I missing something, or is the ACC just plain lousy in football?

The Dawgs’ 42-10 throttling of Georgia Tech was as much a statement about the difference between the SEC and the ACC as it was a statement between the two schools.

The Jackets came into this game as the number four team in the ACC in total offense and scoring offense.  They were also ranked number one in that league in rushing offense.

I understand because run the ball is all they do.  But aside from that, the prolific triple option was pretty much shut down by the UGA defense.  It took Georgia’s number two defense to allow the Jackets to finally get in the end zone; and based on the reaction I saw from defensive coordinator Todd Grantham from the sideline, its going be a rough Monday for the second team “D.”

So, now I ask another question.  How did Tech score 68 points against North Carolina?  The answer to that question lies within the answer to the question posed at the top of the page.  Yes, the ACC is just plain lousy in football.

Their championship game in Charlotte next Saturday between Florida State and Tech may be a competitive one, but it will pale in comparison to the Georgia-Alabama game on the same day.

Odd isn’t it?

When powerhouse Florida State joined the league in 1991, and then Miami came aboard in 2004, it seemed that the ACC had turned the corner from a basketball only conference.  They even put their first five title games in a Florida venue in hopes to have a Miami-Florida State matchup.  But alas, only Florida State made it one to the first five title games, Miami has failed every year including this year thanks to self-imposed penalties.

Earlier this season, the Orange Bowl announced a new 12 year deal in which the ACC Champions would face a team from the Big Ten, SEC or Notre Dame.  I’m thinking that the Orange Bowl is hoping to see the Fighting Irish and possibly either Florida State or Miami every season.

As we move forward toward the SEC title game and Alabama, there is no doubt the SEC has left the ACC in its wake.  Let’s face it; the era of the Super Conferences is here.  And unless, the ACC can convince a few teams to move to their league, they will be forever behind the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac 12 in football.

Fear not ACC fans, there is always basketball.  And lacrosse.
