Winter update: Very little winter weather compared to last year and with the lack of blocking patterns cold does not lock in resulting in a mild winter. More interesting weather than we had in November and most of December for January 2012. Weather patterns look changeable and volatile as warm and cold spells alternate coming and going and making decent precipitation in the swings. The pattern of unseasonably warm air spells alternating with unseasonably cold snaps looks like it will continue for the remainder of winter and on into early Spring. After an atypical La Nina December it looks like the more traditional ENSO signal gradually takes over in the long haul. See the maps for the AVERAGE January-February-March temperature and precipitation departure from normal forecast.
