Atlanta dry spell continues, tropics above average

By Kirk Mellish

Half way through the month and Atlanta has only received 3% of our normal rainfall so far this month, and the chance of significant rain looks to remain small the next 10 days.

Meanwhile, the tropical cyclone season is now already officially above normal in activity with 11 named storms. For half a day yesterday hurricane season history, Igor and Julia only 2nd time in history two Cat 4 hurricanes were active at the same time in the Atlantic. Last time was 1926.

Julia is the 4th Major category hurricane of the season. Karl is expected to become the 6th hurricane of the season before striking Mexico again. The threat to the United States from future storms is expected to increase as the track pattern begins to shift. Georgia may have to hope we get some tropical moisture to aid our drying soils.
