End of November, end of seasons

By Kirk Mellish

Atlanta and the nation start new season, the end of November means the end of meteorological fall and hurricane season. December first marks the start of "meteorological winter" which runs through February.  As the map shows, it was a hyper-active historic tropical storm and hurricane season. We dodged a bullet having that many storms form but with minimal impact to land.

Chicago to date has not had any measurable snow, for only the 2nd time in 82 years this late in the season. But that is set to change in the coming weeks. Atlanta as expected had a mild and dry autumn. That party is over.

As a high school student-- already an amateur weather forecaster, I learned a rule of thumb that said November in general, and Thanksgiving week in particular, would give you a good idea of what the winter ahead would bring.

As the maps show, it is interesting to note the national pattern is a good match to long-range forecasts issued in early October and early November for the coming winter season. Some heavy weather is ahead for Atlanta in the coming week, with more wild temperature swings.
