Meteorological spring

Previous Posts

By Kirk Mellish

Meteorologists and climatologists divide the seasons based on weather pattern shifts rather than on the astronomical calendar. Hence "winter" is December through February, spring March 1 through Mary 31, etc in 3 month intervals.  We "spring ahead 1 hour" this Sunday as Daylight Saving Time begins, and calendar or astronomical spring begins March 20th in the morning with the spring equinox.

MOST of Georgia had a dry winter with temps close to normal to a little above average. Using just data at Hartsfield here is the report on winter in Atlanta. December was 3.2 degrees F warmer than normal with precip 15% above-normal and no snow. January was 1.2 degrees warmer than normal with precip 43% below normal and a trace of snow. February was 0.9 above normal with precip 21% below normal and a trace of snow. Official snow on the first day of spring was 4.2 inches.  So for the 3 winter months as a whole temperatures averaged +1.8 degrees F with 84% of normal precip (-16%) and 0 snow (2.3 inches below normal).  Figures are rounded. Check the maps link below for a better look at the whole region as single point data at the airport skews the results to overly simplified.  Here is the link to temps and precipitation, use tools on left to select last 3 months and Southeast or National.  Snowfall Map.

My long-range outlook for the next 30-90 Days:  It looks like we will maintain a La Nina base state atmosphere across North America. Our pattern of changeability and temp swings should continue through about Easter so we're not done with winter yet. Overall the spring looks to have temps average out normal to a little warmer than normal, with precipitation averaging normal to a little drier than normal.

Since last spring had a La Nina this spring should have similarities to last year. Analog years for the coming spring are: primary...1951, 1954, 1956, 1969, 2008 secondary...1965, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1980, 1990,1999, 2000, 2002.
