NOAA Doppler detected rotation shows the North Georgia tornado originated from a storm with strong rotation in NE Alabama, but the tornado did not touch down in Alabama as the rotation remained aloft.

North Georgia Tornado January 30th

The detection rate for tornadoes on Doppler is very high, sadly so is the false alarm rate. You may die if you rely on and wait for so-called "Tornado Sirens". I did a screen grab of the Atlanta hourly weather forecast off a well know weather company website for that day, it showed cloudy with a 10% chance of rain! Automated forecasts on the web or mobile devices are robots with no meteorologist involved. This can lead you astray in a big bad way if you rely on them in changeable weather. RADIO is the original social media for weather! Radio is the original web source.

Storms could quickly turn severe with damaging winds being the main threat. Burns said he could not rule out the possibility of a tornado, but said the chances are low.

Strong storms usher in cold temperatures

It’s felt like spring in Atlanta yesterday at 73. So consider today a market correction. Things will get back to normal in the days ahead, but it might be a little violent in the transition. WSB meteorologist Kirk Mellish is calling for heavy showers and thunderstorms. Some of those could ...

National Weather Service summary map of significant ice accumulation.

January 25th ice

That Atlanta National Weather Service has compiled a summary map of the Friday January 25 ice event in North Georgia. Here is their map.

A freezing rain advisory goes into effect for metro Atlanta on Friday.

Will it be rain or will it be ice?

Now the waiting begins. WSB meteorologist Kirk Mellish is watching for any winter mischief for metro Atlanta. “We are at the point where computer models are of no value,” Mellish said. “We just have to monitor the temperatures and watch the radar trends.” Most of metro Atlanta will be ok, ...

Computer generated probability of a slight amount freezing rain.

Friday no snow but light rain may freeze

Read the blog and the previous post "Brush with Old Man Winter" for details on Friday weather. No power loss issues are expected for the Atlanta area, and whatever falls will not last long. The weekend looks dry and a big warm up comes next week.

The winter storm watch will take effect early Friday morning and includes some of the northern suburbs like Bartow, Cherokee, and Forysth counties.

Sleet and freezing rain possible in north Ga.

It’s not easy being a weather man this time of year. WSB meteorologist Kirk Mellish has been eying the possibility of some sort of wintry precipitation moving into area Friday. But there is one problem with committing to a forecast right now. “The weather system in question does not yet ...

The chance of at least one inch of snow.

Friday Brush with Old Man Winter

Another close call winter weather situation expected this Friday but a dry weekend follows. Big warm up next week.

Mellish: Coldest weather of the season moves in

So there won’t be any snow or ice to worry about the next few days. But that extra heavy coat might be helpful. WSB meteorologist Kirk Mellish says we will see lows down in the 20s for the next couple of days and the NW suburbs will struggle to make ...

MS and AL had thundersnows with 1-4 inches on the ground in some areas Thursday afternoon and evening.

Finally a string of days with sunshine

The snow fizzles, at last the rain ends and finally a stretch of much deserved sunny days for Atlanta, even though it will be chilly and then colder next week. I do not expect widespread black ice problems Friday morning but a few especially bridges, ramps and overpasses. Read on.

The problematic upper level low pressure energy in the jet stream passing across the SE USA.

On the line between big deal and no big deal

We could dodge a bullet or get smacked. The GA mountains are under the gun for sure and even worse for the Mountains of East TN and for KY/VA/NC. Read on...

Georgia DOT prepares for icy weather with salt trucks.

Winter storm watch issued, as metro Atlanta preps for wintry mix

Welcome to another wet and gray day. The only question is if there will be any white later on. WSB meteorologist Kirk Mellish has been watching this complex weather system called an upper level low all week. He says it will arrive Thursday afternoon and then we could see our ...

European Model 500 mb heights/vorticity forecast chart showing upper-level closed low in the jet stream flow.
Various models do not agree on the strength or track, significant snow is most likely along and north of the low centers path which remains uncertain.

Snow or just an upper low?

This is not a winter storm situation with a snowstorm heading our way. It's been unseasonably warm and the ground and air are still mild. IF rain mixes with or changes to snow for a few hours work and school as normal would be expected as of now unless things change, which is always possible. Listen for updates daily on the radio and click the forecast links here at wsbradio.com and read my blog for more.

American Global Forecast System snowfall ending Friday the 18th. The GFS is just one of many models, it and the others will change multiple times every day. A model projection is not the real weather and is not my forecast.

Weather shifting Old Man Winter restless

The weather ground is shifting and there will be headlines about weather extremes in Europe and the USA before this month is done and next month, too. We will feel the changes here in the Southeast.

January-February weather changes

January is a weather battleground, February more wintry before next thaw.

January weather trends

The various numerical prediction models that simulate the atmosphere have not been reliable in recent weeks so even the short to medium range forecasts, let alone the long-range outlook are suspect and subject to more than the usual and normal revisions. Here are the trends.

If you're careful you can drive on snow really slow in low gear.

Winter weather awareness in Georgia

Winter Weather Awareness Week for Georgia is December 2-7, 2012. The main threats from winter weather across the Southeast stem from ice storms, crop-killing freezes and occasional snow. Last winter (2011-2012), all 4 climate sites reported a Trace of snowfall (Atlanta, Athens, Macon, and Columbus).

Expected temperature anomaly pattern for the coming winter.

Winter forecast 2012-2013

My winter outlook is certainly different from how last winter turned out and differs a lot from the NOAA/NWS winter forecast. I use the analogue method instead of computer models to make seasonal predictions.

Happy Thanksgiving.

The ghost of Thanksgiving weather past

The warmest November 22nd in Atlanta was last year at 77. When Thanksgiving was on the 26th in 1938 Atlanta had snow flurries!

Seasons change

Winter weather extremes and swings

The most notable thing about weather patterns since September has been the see-saw roller coaster ride of the jet stream and the temperature pogo stick thermometer pattern with long dry spells punctuated by the occasional short wet spell.

Election news may be the weather: an election guide to weather impact

IF the election is as close as so-called experts predict then every last detail will be agonized over, including the weather.
