Detroit, MI —
According to USA Today, General Motors is teaming with AT&T to bring 4G connectivity to most of its vehicles by 2014.
"It shows that GM is serious about the connected vehicle," Thilo Koslowski, a vice president specializing in automotive technology for Gartner, tells the newspaper. "It's a pretty big commitment."
GM says it can bring streaming video without the need to lug along DVDs. Cars will have Wi-Fi hot spots that handle multiple devices. And navigation systems will grow more sophisticated and display faster.
One of the possible stumbling blocks is the never ending upgrading of technology. Ford Motor Company uses Microsoft Sync, a system that uses driver's smart-phones, so the Sync connects with the upgrade of the phone.
However, GM says it is not concerned about possible outdated technology. "You are future-proofing your vehicle by going to 4G," Phil Abram, GM's chief infotainment officer tells USA Today, "because there is so much untapped potential."
The 4G system will be available starting next year on most model year 2015 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac cars and trucks.
Terms and pricing haven't been announced.
