Atlanta - Billboards are popping up around the entire state including metro Atlanta urging anyone with information on a missing Eatonton woman to call authorities.
Shirley Dermond, 87, is presumed kidnapped after her husband’s decapitated body was discovered in their Lake Oconee home one week ago.
So far 100 digital billboards are displaying her picture with the message “missing and in danger” and the phone numbers for both the FBI and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department.
“We have them in every metro area from Valdosta to Chattanooga,” says Conner Poe with the Outdoor Advertising Association of Georgia.
He says the effort is in conjunction with the FBI which uses dedicated billboard space for emergency messages.
Poe says the message about Dermond will remain up until the federal agency says otherwise.
Virginia Correa spotted one billboard located along Lawrenceville Hwy near Beaver Ruin Road in Lilburn.
“I think that is so great because when I just saw it, I got shivers just seeing the lady,” she tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.
Meantime, Gwinnett County private investigator Robin Martinelli of Martinelli Investigations, Inc. believes the perpetrator is either deranged or has a personal vendetta against the Dermonds.
She says in the 15 years as a PI, she has never seen such a heinous crime where the head of removed and taken from a crime scene.
“It is bizarre to actually to take off and murder somebody that way to think it couldn’t be personal,” says Martinelli.
She is also not convinced the elderly woman is dead.
“There is a reason she was taken and not left behind,” says Martinelli.
Investigators have never considered Shirley Dermond a suspect in her husband due to her age and the condition of her husband’s body. Her personal belongings were also left behind including her purse and cell phone.
Martinelli believes investigators are now going through the couple’s phone and financial records to see to whom their last calls were placed and what expenditures they made before the crime occurred.
