UGA sets records, but still sluggish out of gates

Commings returns

UGA cornerback Sanders Commings, in his first game of season following a two-game suspension, brings down Florida Atlantic receiver William Dukes after Dukes made a reception inside the 20 to setup an Owls touchdown.

ATHENS —

Ok, since Tony Schiavone is the boss, I get the hard assignment. I get to play bad cop.

Go me. Might be a short column.

Yeah this game was a fun win no doubt. The No. 7  Georgia Bulldogs beat Florida Atlantic 56-20.

The Dawgs set a record with 713 yards. Yay.

UGA had two freshman running backs rush for more than 100 yards (Todd Gurley 111, Keith Marshall 104). That's the first time that's happened since 2004 (Danny Ware and Thomas Brown). Also good.

The average time of possession was 1:59. Impressive.

"Stats are for losers," Coach Mark Richt told the Georgia Radio Network.

Ouch.

But this is part of what Richt was talking about. Think back to that first half. It was sort of Buffalo déjà vu.

The Dawgs led 28-14 and the Owls, who scored seven points against Wagner (I'm too tired to look up who they are or where they are from, but let's put it this way, they aren't in the SEC) were ripping off yards like they were FSU.

Georgia gave up 263 in the first two quarters. That's more than seven entire games last year.

Graham Wilbert, the FAU QB, threw for 168 yards and wasn't sacked.

But probably the biggest surprise, the Dawgs couldn't get off the field.

FAU was 8-for-12 on third down, which is about 6-for-10 better than it should be.

Oh and there was the time of possession in the first half. 20:14 to 9:46. Now admittedly that's because Georgia's offense was scoring quicker than I can type, but it is notable.

"if you have that many yards and that much time of possession, we have some issues to clean up," said Richt.

At least the penalites were not too bad (eight for 49 yards), or at least for Georgia.

Yeah the Dawgs got everything straight in the second half, allowing only 55 total yards and one TD that was a  pick six. And the offense had 4325 yards (ok, maybe I exaggerated a little).

But the first halves have been, well kind of sloppy.

Georgia led Buffalo 24-18 and trailed Missouri 10-9.

"I think we've got ability," said Richt. "But we've got a ways to go."

We all know the SEC opponents start for real with Vanderbilt next Saturday.

So from now on the Dawgs better not wait until the half time speech to look like a Top 10 team.

(Happy Tony, that's the best bad cop I can play).
