ATHENS —
You could feel this one coming.
The atmosphere at Sanford Stadium was extra electric. You expect that for SEC games. But never Vanderbilt.
No one forgot the how last year's game against the Commodores ended. The cheap shots, the chippy play, Todd Grantham vs. James Franklin.
There was nothing anyone in gold could say after this one.
No. 5 UGA 48, not No. 5 Vanderbilt 3.
" Everybody just flat out got after it," Georgia coach Mark Richt told the Georgia Bulldog Radio Network. "All I can say is that's the way you play Georgia football right there.
No kidding.
It was clear the Dawgs wanted this one badly. It reminded me of some of those revenge games (2005 LSU, 2011 Auburn etc.) where Georgia just blew doors and old Sanford Stadium was rocking.
Sanford Stadium never rocks during the Vanderbilt game.
The media (guilty) made a lot about this one, some even called it a "rivalry" (I'm dumb, but I'm not stupid). But all of that bickering between the coaches last year clearly upped the ante.
Plus the fact Georgia should have lost.
"We certainly vindicated ourselves from a year ago when we just about gave the thing away," said Richt about that blocked punt in the last 10 seconds that gave Vanderbilt a chance to win that they didn't take.
So maybe it wasn't exactly surprising to see the first stringers pounding away at this meek Commodore offense in the fourth quarter while Georgia was up by 147.
"They played with their blood a little bit hot," Richt said. "We need to play with our blood a little bit hot."
This was a good as they can possibly look.
Georgia has put a lot of whoopins on Vandy in the past. But there have been none worse than this. Only equaled by a 45-0 win in 1976.
Nothing the Vanderbilt offense did this time was memorable. Jordan Rogers threw for 218, which is a lot better than the 40-something he had last year. But his team lost by 46, so whatever.
Jarvis "The Sackmaster" Jones returned to make three tackles for a loss, including one of the scariest sacks you'll ever see when he came looks on fourth down and had to pull what was left of Rogers out of his teeth.
This was the first time the UGA defense played like it is supposed to. And next week they get all of the horses back.
As for the boys on the other side of the ball, there is something special here.
After the silly 713 yards the offense put up last week, 567 looks a little disappointing. But this looked like the same game. Just guys in red running up and down the field with little resistance.
It's the first time in school history Georgia has scored 40 points in four straight games.
Now it has to be said that Buffalo, Missouri, Florida Atlantic and Vanderbilt aren't exactly the Monsters of the Midway. But these guys can only move the ball up the field faster in practice.
"It's fun to rack up good numbers," said Richt. "But these starts are for losers really." (He's really got it in for statisticians I think. That's two weeks in a row).
I know Richt is in love with the balance of this offense. This week the Dawgs ran for 302 and threw for 265. Good luck stopping that.
"We are going to be playing some other defensives that are going to challenge us along the way," said Richt.
And that would be South Carolina, maybe Florida and insert SEC West Champion here. That's it.
We still haven't seen Georgia's best defense group, but this is the best offense the Dawgs have had in a long, long time. Maybe ever.
All last season, Georgia fans were never really sure how good their team was. Well they have a pretty good idea tonight.
Or as I overheard someone wearing a Vanderbilt shirt in the press box say after the game "that was total domination in every facet of the game."
Those Vanderbilt people are pretty smart.
