A not-so-new scam is making a comeback says the Cobb County sheriff. Someone posing as a law officer is calling people to tell them there is a warrant out for their arrest and demands they pay up immediately – over the phone.
“And if they want to have this arrest warrant taken care of, they need to send $1,000 or $2,000. So they set it up using a Money-Pak Green Dot Card,” said Chief Deputy Milton Beck at the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office.
Nobody from the Cobb Sheriff’s Office would ever demand payment over the phone, said Beck.
So far, approximately eight people say they have been victimized by this scam, according to Beck.
If you have information on the scammer or if you have been contacted along similar lines, Beck asked that you call the Cobb County Sheriff’s Investigative Unit at (770) 499-4653. If you have questions about being summoned to Cobb County State Court, call (770) 528-2628 or Superior Court at (770) 528-1801.
