DeKalb County Police say a 16-year-old who was shot Tuesday afternoon had nothing to do with a burglary in which the homeowner was at home at the time.
Chief Cedric Alexander says they learned on Wednesday that the teen had actually skipped school and was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"Imagine the fact that you're looking for subjects who just invaded a house and we know that they have left the scene running and you run across this young man. Officers see he's running and they pursue. But had he stopped right there, merely, he was just being truant from school," said Alexander.
Alexander says an officer unintentionally shot the teen in the torso area when he found him in a shed.
The two suspects, who tried to burglarize a home on Leisure Wood Lane while the homeowner hid in the closet, have been arrested.
