Several agencies are looking for a man accused of carjacking an 81-year-old woman and throwing her in the trunk of her own car Sunday in Walton County.
Deputies from Barrow and Walton counties, Georgia State Patrol officers and Winder police officers helped look for John Calhoun, 29, early Monday after he was accused of kidnapping the woman from her home then crashing her car behind a movie theater, according to Channel 2 Action News.
Investigators were able to track the woman’s cellphone to find her.
When they spotted her vehicle, the man driving sped away, and a chase ensued, Channel 2 reported. It soon ended when the man driving the woman’s car crashed then escaped.
Authorities searched for Calhoun near Exchange Boulevard in Bethlehem.
No arrest has been reported in the incident, but the woman is believed to be in good health, Channel 2 reported.
“She seemed to be in reasonably good health, had some abrasions on the back of her head I assume from being in the trunk of the car,” Sheriff Joe Chapman told the television station.
The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Investigators believe Calhoun did not act alone and that he may be involved in a string of car break-ins in the area.
“We do believe that there’s a strong potential that these individuals are armed and dangerous,” Georgia Bureau of Investigations spokesman Michael Ayers told Channel 2.
Investigators said the woman does not remember the incident.
Police are asking anyone with information about the whereabouts of John Calhoun to call 911.
