The widow of the man whose death prompted an investigation of the Carroll County 911 system says things might be different if the ambulance wasn’t sent to the wrong city.
Reba Langley tells Channel 2 Action News, "I thought maybe if they'd gotten here earlier, maybe he would be alive today."
The family of 73-year-old Fred Langley believes that 911 dispatcher error is responsible for his death.
And now a special grand jury will be empaneled to investigate problems at the Carroll County 911 call center.
Coweta Judicial Circuit District Attorney Pete Skandalakis tells WSB, he hopes to have the grand jury in place next month.
"We will be talking to witnesses, we will be gathering information and we'll be looking to see if the system that is in place right now is the best system for Carroll County," said Skandalakis
District 3 Commissioner Ashley Hendrix sought the investigation after a mistake by dispatch sent emergency medical responders to the wrong address on June 23.
Instead of being directed to Kathy Lane in Temple, the emergency workers were sent to a Kathy Lane in Carrollton -- nine miles away. The error resulted in a 10 minute delay.
Langley, who suffered a diabetic seizure, later died. A medical examiner told Channel 2 Action News that Langley had a heart condition and could not conclude the delay contributed to his death.
Officials blamed the mistake on human error and fired the dispatcher involved. However, Hendrix believes the problem is also the result of an inadequate system upgrade.
"The major concern is whether or not the system is capable of handling the volume of calls that they get in Carroll County," Skandalakis tells WSB.
A special grand jury can meet for weeks or months. Its final report will likely include recommendations, but Skandalakis stresses it will be up to Carroll County to enact them.
"If they get to the bottom of it," says Mrs. Langley, "maybe we can have some peace with it."
