Victor Hill whistle-blower says he was indicted

By Condace Pressley

A former member of the Clayton County Sheriff's office claims that he was indicted after trying to blow the whistle on indicted sheriff Victor Hill.

Jonathan Newton worked as a public information officer under Hill and said he was ordered to help with Hill's book and campaign - on company time.

He said he raised questions about Hill in 2008, but was never questioned.

"I'm confident in our justice system, and I know through God's grace, justice will prevail," Newton told Channel 2 Action News.

Sharon Crenshaw said Newton tried to blow the whistle on Hill several times and helped her with an ethics complaint against Hill, which was filed with the state last year.

"We put it together and wrote it out, and I took it and I filed it," she said.

Clayton County Chief Deputy Sheriff Garland Watkins said, over the course of an investigation, people say things that might implicate them.

"With what they tell you," Watkins said, "there may be some culpability. There may be some involvement."

Watkins said investigators shared their findings with both state and federal investigators before pursuing the case against Hill at the county level.

Hill strongly denies any wrongdoing, and his attorney says they will fight all 37 charges in the indictment.

On Friday, Judge Jeronda Carter recused herself from the Hill case.
