Gwinnett Police pull over drivers spotted texting during undercover operation

Gwinnett County Police go undercover this week to catch motorists who text while driving.

Sgt. Andrew Skelly, who's leading the operation, says few tickets have been written since the new law went into effect because enforcement is difficult.

"On a regular day it's pretty much impossible for us in marked cars because they can see us coming in the mirror," he tells WSB's Sandra Parrish who got to ride along with officers.

Skelly says motorcycle units write the most tickets because they have an easier time of spotting those texting at intersections.

During the undercover operation, an unmarked vehicle would eye a driver texting and then a marked unit would pull it over.

In two hours time, officers pulled over three cars, one of them driven by Chris Wade of Lawrenceville.  He was spotted checking the internet on his phone while stopped at a red light.

"I did not know that it (the law) applied to everything, I thought it was just texting," he says. "I always make sure not to do it while I'm driving."

Wade was given a warning, as was another woman who was checking directions on her phone.  She also said she didn't realize it was illegal to manipulate a phone for anything other a making a call.

"You have to be legally parked in a parking lot if you're going to do that type of activity on your phone," says Skelly.

He hopes news coverage of the undercover operation will be a warning to drivers.

"I do think that it's a prevalent problem," says Skelly.
