Two UGA students injured during robbery attempt

By Richard Sangster

ATHENS —

Two University of Georgia students were sent to the hospital after being attacked and beaten in Athens during an attempted armed robbery.

The early morning attack happened on College Avenue just outside downtown Athens and north of the UGA campus, according Athens-Clarke County Police spokeswoman Hilda Sorrow.

The pair were walking home around 2:30 Thursday morning when three armed men approached.

The 21-year-old students told police they ignored the men and kept walking. But one of the victims was struck in the head with a two-by-four scrap of wood, while the other man was beaten by the suspects and suffered a cut over his eye.

The suspects tore out the student's pants pocket trying to steal his wallet and cell phone.

Sorrow told WSB's Richard Sangster police only have a vague description of the suspects: "Three black men, one with light skin and wearing a red hoodie."

The students were taken to St. Mary's hospital in Athens for treatment and then released.

Sorrow says there have been no arrests.
