Flights cancelled and delayed due to storm in northeast

New England is bracing for a major winter storm over the next few days.

Up to two feet of snow is expected to fall in some areas in the northeast, starting on Friday and into Saturday.

The National Weather Service says most of southern New England could get between 18 and 24 inches, and New York City is expecting anywhere from four to six inches.

Forecasters say this storm, named "Winter Nor'easter," has the potential to be among the top snowstorms in New England.

Many airlines are making plans in preparation for the storm.

Delta has started cancelling flights at Northeast airports on Friday, with most cancellations coming after noon eastern standard time. Approximately 740 system cancellations are in place for Friday across many northeast airports including Delta's hubs at LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International according to Delta storm updates. Customers booked on Delta flights in cities affected by the storm are being rescheduled by the airlines to fly at a later date.

The airlines says customers whose flight plans may be affected by winter weather expected Friday across the U.S. Northeast, Ottawa and Montreal will be able to make one-time changes to their travel schedules without fees.

Delta officials say they are closely monitoring conditions along the storm's path and they encourage customers to consider moving up, postponing or re-routing their travel to avoid possible inconvenience from expected flight delays due to winter weather. Full details can be found at delta.com.
