Lawrenceville, GA —
A weekend traffic alert: the Department of Transportation is temporarily shifting lanes on Georgia 20 to make room for work on Highway 316.
The temporary lanes open Saturday morning, parallel to the existing ones.
In preparation, one lane of 20 is being shut overnight Thursday and Friday nights.
DOT spokeswoman Teri Pope tells Channel 2 Action News, "We're about to start building the bridge that will bring State Route 20 traffic over 316. No more intersection!"
The new bridge is one of two designed to relieve congestion along the busy stretch of road in Gwinnett County. The other is already under construction on Collins Hill Road.
Pope acknowledges this is one of the "bigger" changes in a while for metro drivers. She says if you pay attention to the signs and orange barrels, though, "It will direct you exactly where to go."
All this is costing the state $37,400,000 and should be finished by the end of 2014.
