Ga. 400 commuter: "Another harebrained idea by the DOT"

A massive transportation project means road closures at a busy interchange.

The Georgia Department of Transportation will keep the on and off HOV ramps on Interstate 85 at Lindbergh Drive closed for the next six months.  It will allow the DOT to work on reconfiguring the I85 to Georgia 400 interchange.

The department is changing the road to allow drivers on southbound 85 to access Georgia 400.

The closures will be in place for up to six months to construct a bridge foundation.  They are expected to reopen by July 21.

In addition to reworking the interchange, the DOT is also adding a pedestrian trail will from Cheshire Bridge Road to Lenox Road, including a bridge across the North Fork Peachtree Creek.

The DOT cautions the ramp closures are just the start.  As the project progresses over the next months, drivers can expect closures along Cheshire Bridge Road, Sidney Marcus Boulevard and Buford Highway.

The entire 85/400 interchange project is said to be on schedule and is expected to be completed by the end of 2013.
