It’s felt like spring in Atlanta yesterday at 73.
So consider today a market correction. Things will get back to normal in the days ahead, but it might be a little violent in the transition.
WSB meteorologist Kirk Mellish is calling for heavy showers and thunderstorms. Some of those could be severe. A TORNADO WATCH is in effect for all of Atlanta until 4pm.
But the biggest newsmaker won’t be the thunder and lightning with the storms, it will be the wind.
“Only a little thunder and lightning expected,” said Mellish. “But it will be a windy day. Winds will be gusting to 35 mph at times, even without a storm. In heavy downpours, gusts of 70 mph could cause downed trees and power lines in some areas, through 5 p.m give or take a couple hours, an isolated tornado is also possible”.
The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for all of metro Atlanta and the northern two-thirds of the state. There is also a high wind warning until 6 p.m. tonight for the north Georgia mountains.
The Weather Service has also issued a flood watch through this evening for everyone north of a line from Cartersville to Atlanta. That includes the metro Atlanta counties of Bartow, Cobb, Cherokee, Forsyth, north Fulton and Paulding. One to two inches of rain are possible in the watch area, with higher amounts possible in spots.
The storms will be the marker of the strong cold front. Before they get here, Mellish says to expect mild temperatures with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s. Afterwards, it will be much colder with overnight lows back down into the mid 30s.
Once today’s threat passes, Mellish says there will be plenty of sunshine for the rest of the week. Thursday and Friday, expect highs mostly in the 40s and lows around 30.
Things will be a little warmer for the weekend. There will be a few clouds with highs near 55 including Super Bowl Sunday, Mellish says with lows in the 30s.
