Driver services wait
WSB-TV
A computer glitch forced people to wait in line for hours at driver's license offices across the state, including the Department of Driver Services office in Clayton County.

Wednesday’s incredibly long lines at the Georgia Department of Driver Services had nothing to do with the new requirements that have already slowed down the process.

This time it was statewide computer glitch.

Offices across the state could not access the national driver’s registry, where officials check to see if applicants have outstanding tickets in other states.

"We can't issue licenses without that," Department of Driver Services spokeswoman Susan Sports explained said.

The computer system went down around noon and was back up around 3:30 p.m. But by then the damage had been done.

People kept coming in and coming in and coming in ... it's chaotic," V.J. Fuller of Marietta told the AJC she waited four hours to get her license renewed at the Canton Road office.

Others were not as lucky.

Some people waited through the outage and still could not get a license. They were given passes to be first in line on Thursday. But that means everyone might have to wait even longer.

The outage did not affect road test appointments, written exams, or motor vehicle registration.

Sports says Wednesday’s issues had nothing to do with new requirements for renewing driver's licenses that have increased wait times at Driver Services offices.

Drivers must now bring an original or certified birth certification or valid passport, proof of a Social Security number and two documents proving where they live.

Driver's license offices are open through Saturday.
