UGA weighs domestic partner benefits

  • comment(2)

By Marcy Williams

UGA faculty members call on the university to adopt domestic partner benefits.

Over the past decade, the University Council has passed similar resolutions but has not prevailed with the Board of Regents.  Proponents argue schools comparable to UGA offer benefits to same-sex partners, including arch-rival Florida.  They suggest Georgia may be at a competitive disadvantage recruiting top-quality personnel.

Some schools within the University System of Georgia, including Georgia Tech and Georgia State, offer limited benefits such as vision and dental to domestic partners.

Committee members within the University Council believe UGA may be able to set up a program without regents' authorization by using non-state money.
