State college enrollment drops

By Bob Coxe

Atlanta, GA —

Enrollment is down in the 35 universities and public colleges in Georgia.

The AJC reports the difficult economy and harder-to-get financial aid are major reasons for the decline.

The institutions are already faced with $54 million in state budget cuts this year and next, and fewer students could mean cutting more positions and programs.

Rural colleges are feeling the pain especially hard.   Enrollment is actually up from last year at four of the state's five biggest universities, from 0.60 percent at Georgia state to 2.9 percent at Georgia Tech.  Enrollment's down 0.70 percent at UGA.
