Adams: expect tuition hike at UGA

Athens, GA —

Tuition's going up again at UGA.  President Michael Adams anticipates a modest increase in tuition when the Georgia Board of Regents sets the fees for the upcoming school year.

"We're fooling ourselves about the notion that we're going to be able to function in 2012 at 1965 prices," said Adams.

Adams said UGA is due more money out of the state budget, but it's still not enough to afford pay raises for teachers and staff.  He calls that his number one priority, worried that UGA won't be competitive in the salaries it can offer quality personnel.

He also said lawmakers will likely have to re-tweak the HOPE funding formula.  "We've got to retain support and protect young people who go to places like Georgia and Georgia Tech or we're going to slip back to the brain drain of the 60's and 70's before we had a program like this." said Adams.
