Atlanta, GA —
Authorities have identified a man killed while riding his scooter in Atlanta as Liam Rattray, a recent graduate of Georgia Tech. Rattray died Monday night after being hit by a car while riding his scooter in the city's Little Five Points neighborhood.
Police say Rattray was thrown from the bike after 42-year-old Darrin Murphy hit him from behind.
“(Murphy) struck the rear of the scooter,” said Atlanta Police Officer Kim Jones told News/Talk WSB. “The victim that was on the scooter was ejected and thrown over in the southbound lanes where another vehicle struck this gentleman and killed him.”
Murphy, has been charged with vehicular homicide and DUI. The Buckhead resident reportedly faced a DUI charge in 2009 which was later reduced to a reckless driving citation.
“The officers on the scene believed Mr. Murphy to be impaired,” Jones said.
Rattray, a London native, had become an American citizen three months ago. He also had recently graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in public policy.
Friends mourning his death described him as a passionate and ambitious student who had set up a farmer's market at the school. They say he lived in a school bus, fueled by biodiesel, on Ponce de Leon Avenue.
