Snubbed Student Donates to Agnes Scott

ATLANTA (AP) A woman who was barred from studying engineering in the 1930s has donated $1 million to the all-female Agnes Scott College to help encourage the study of science and math.

The money is from the estate of longtime Atlanta resident Frances Marx Shillinglaw, the wife of retired Coca-Cola Co. executive Clifford Shillinglaw, who died in 1979. Frances Shillinglaw died in September at 93.

Frances Shillinglaw majored in French at the all-female Smith College in the 1930s because she was told women don't study science. The money from her estate will support Agnes Scott programs that give support and mentoring to students majoring in science and math.
