A Smyrna man says he will file a formal complaint against the Cobb County police officers who shot and killed his dog, while responding to an alarm call at his house.

Robby King was in a rush to get out of his Smyrna home Sunday afternoon because his first grandson was about to be born.

Naturally he screwed up and triggered the alarm and couldn’t remember his password while on the phone with the alarm company.

He planned on squaring it away with Cobb County police when they came to his front door.

"I told her I'll just wait here at the front door and when Cobb County shows up and give them my ID let them know I'm the homeowner it was a false alarm," King told Channel 2 Action News.

But the cops came through the back door which was unlocked. That’s where King's 6-year-old chocolate Lab Luke was camped out and he wasn’t too thrilled with strangers coming inside.

According to a police report, Luke started barking and chased one of the cops into the yard.

"I heard 'pop, pop' and I screamed out , 'Oh, God please don't shoot my dog, and walked to the door and he's just laying there gasping for breath," King said.

King added that the officer admitted his dog never tried to bite him.

"He didn't try to bite the guy; the guy admitted that. (Luke) was just the most gentle animal you could ever meet," said King.

Channel 2 reports that a witness is documented saying the dog bit her in the past, but she says the statement was untrue.

Cobb police say the officers did what they are trained to do and the case is closed.

But King wants the officers to have additional training when it comes to dealing with animals.

"I had to watch him bleed to death and gasp for air, and they just stood there looking at me like I was stupid," he said.
