Sheep brought in to cut grass at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport

By Jennifer Griffies

Yes, those are sheep you see at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.

Chris Davis, the airport's Assistant Director of Aviation Maintenance, tells WSB they're looking at alternatives when it comes to keeping the grass trimmed on the southside of the airport on Riverdale Road.

"What we wanted to look at are some cost effective ways to reduce the unwanted vegetation that we have growing around the airport and looking at some ways to reduce the carbon footprint," said Davis.

Davis says they considered sheep after seeing other areas do that.  Chastain Park used a bunch of goats to keep the grass short there.

"This is an area of property that we have off the airport proper in non-critical area.  Actually the sheep are located in a fenced in area.  The location is approximately 1 1/2 acres of property," said Davis.

They're going to see how the 100 grazing sheep will control the vegetation.  Davis admits it could definitely be a money saver.

"In some of the research, it could range from anywhere between five percent cheaper than herbicides.  On a labor side, it kind of depends," said Davis.

Airport officials along with co-executive director of Trees Atlanta, Connie Veates, will hold a press conference Wednesday to discuss the pilot program.
