Sandy Springs police think they have a pretty good idea why an 81-year-old woman crashed into several cars on Roswell Road near Hightower Trial.

And it had nothing to do with her age.

When police arrested Marilyn Schmitz they found an open bottle of Jack Daniels in her purse. She has been charged with several crimes, including DUI.

The woman was driving south on Roswell Road when she rear-ended one car, crossed over the yellow line and hit someone else head on, then drove her own car into a power pole and flipped it.

Firefighters had to cut through the 81-year-old’s vehicle to pull her out. She was rushed to Atlanta Medical Center with several broken bones.

Schmitz blew a .161 when she took a breathalyzer test. That’s more than twice the legal limit of .08.

The elderly woman told police she did not remember drinking, but eventually she said she had a couple of drinks at a concert.

As of Wednesday, Schmitz was hospitalized in good condition. She has a February court date.
