Atlanta, GA —
Police have now identified three suspects in the videotaped beating of a gay man outside a southwest Atlanta grocery store. Police Chief George Turner says authorities are now working on issuing warrants.
Chief Turner told residents during a community meeting Thursday night that police hope to have the suspects in custody in the next few days.
"We are working to get the fugitive packages together to bring those individuals to justice that we have identified," Turner said.
More than 70 people were at the meeting. It was held at Iconium Baptist Church, which is right across the street from the JVP Market on McDaniel Street where Brandon White was beaten by Saturday. The video from an onlooker was posted on an Internet site over the weekend.
Crime Stoppers Thursday increased the reward to $15,000 for information leading to an arrest.
Earlier this week, 20-year-old White spoke about his ordeal. White says he hadn't planned to report the incident to police, but now wants those responsible to face justice.
"I should have justice because those guys didn't feel my pain. They didn't care whether or not I was injured. I could've died that day. But by them going ahead and wanna release it and put it on the Internet, I feel that they wanted the attention themselves. They wanted to make themselves look like they were brave, look like they were strong. In my opinion, I'm the brave one," said White.
The FBI may pursue the case as a federal hate crime because the men in the video are repeatedly shouting gay slurs at White.
Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
