Report: Federal buildings should be safer, agency wasting millions

Are you in danger when you visit the federal courthouse in Atlanta?    There are new concerns about safety at federal buildings here and across the country.

The Federal Protective Service polices 9,000 government buildings and courthouses nationwide.

But an alarming new report from federal auditors finds workers and visitors aren't being kept as safe as they could be.

Roughly 5,000 federal buildings in the last two years have not had their security assessments updated," says Government Accountability Office analyst Mark Goldstein.

In fact, the audit found the FPS operates with a $1.3 billion annual budget, with disappointing results.

In one instance, the agency spent $35 million to verify certifications of security guards--only to abandon the program.

And the shortfalls are costing taxpayers.  Some federal agencies are paying for their own security assessments, in addition to paying FPS for theirs.

Homeland Security acknowledges agency needs to improve, agreeing with the recommendations in the report.
