Police chase ends in deadly shooting on I-75 in Marietta

Police still have not released the name of the armed robber that led police on a wild chase down I-575 and I-75 and was eventually shot and killed by on office on the interstate.

All because of a couple of armed robberies Sunday morning.

Police say the suspect held up the Marathon station on Bells Ferry Road in Woodstock around 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Deputies with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s office realized the suspect’s description matched that of the person who robbed a store in Cobb County earlier in the morning, according to a statement by Lt. Jay Baker with the Cherokee Sheriff’s office.

About 45 minutes after the robbery, a pair of Woodstock police officers chased the suspect south on I-575 into Cobb County. They finally stopped the suspect on I-75 south near South Marietta Parkway.

The suspect pulled out a gun and was shot and killed by officers on the highway around 11 a.m., Lt.  Baker said in the statement.

The GBI has confirmed it is handling the investigation of the officer involved shooting.

During the investigation, authorities closed all lanes of I-75 expect for the left shoulder. The interstate was eventually reopened around 4:45 p.m.

The suspect’s name will be released after the next of kin has been notified.
