It will be a long working weekend for a panel assigned to find six replacements for the DeKalb County School Board.

The five-member panel, commissioned by Gov. Nathan Deal, started reading through 403 applications Friday afternoon and had it down to 75 before work began Saturday. They hope to have the list trimmed down to 24 today.

"All of these folks responded to a call," nomination panel chairman Kenneth Mason told Channel 2 Action News. "They deserve our time to read and to process what they have given us."

The panel quickly threw out the applications of those who don't live in DeKalb County and don't meet the legal standards to be a school board member in Georgia.

The panel hopes to start interview candidates as early as Saturday.

Earlier in the week, a federal judge upheld the governor's decision to replace six suspended DeKalb County School Board members.
