Covington police say two people are in jail following a car chase Wednesday afternoon.

It was all over a purse.

Two suspects accused of grabbing a woman’s purse at a Wal-Mart in Covington would not stop when police tried to pull them over. And it went on like this through four counties and 40 miles – until the suspects crashed in downtown Atlanta.

A 51-year-old woman was loading groceries into her trunk at the Wal-Mart in Covington around 1 p.m. Wednesday when her purse was snatched from her shopping car, Capt. Ken Malcom with Covington police said.

The victim did grab her purse, but she was dragged for about 300 yards through the store’s parking lot.

Witness told police to follow man and the woman in a maroon Ford Fusion. A Covington police officer spotted the suspects on Almond Road at I-20, Malcom said.

“This vehicle was stolen out of Wisconsin,” Malcom said in an emailed statement.

The officer turned on his lights and siren but the suspects ignored him and took off on I-20 westbound toward Atlanta.

The chase continued through Rockdale, DeKalb and Fulton Counties. Georgia State Patrol troopers joined in on the chase once the suspects made it to Boulevard on I-20.

The suspects jumped off the interstate at Capitol Avenue and turned left onto Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, according to Gordy Wright, GSP spokesman.

“Heavy traffic aided the officers and they were able to pin this vehicle and stop it,” Malcom said.

Both the driver and the passenger were arrested. The officer who originally pursued the suspects picked up some minor injuries while making the arrest. The suspects’ names were not released.

The victim of the purse snatching was transported to an Atlanta hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
