New Investigation Into Atlanta Eagle Raid

The city is starting a new investigation into the controversial raid that took place at the Atlanta Eagle gay bar in September 2009.

The second investigation is a requirement of the more than $1 million settlement, which mandated Atlanta police to conduct a thorough investigation into the raid by June 8.

"I am not going to prejudge things.  We have very competent counsel. We've got a good leader leading the investigation," said Mayor Kasim Reed.

The city is paying for the second investigation. It has hired former U.S. attorney Joe Whitley and the firm Greenberg Traurig.

Police arrested eight employees in what they described as a drug and sex investigation.  All of them were either acquitted or had the charges dropped. Witnesses said the officers used anti-gay slurs and roughed up customers. None of the 60 plus bar customers were ever charged.

"I want to learn from everything that happened in that instance so that I can make sure that all citizens, certainly citizens in the GLBT community can be treated better," said Reed.

Dennis Hammock with the International Brotherhood of Police Officers tells Channel 2 Action News over the past few weeks, officer after officer has been summoned to the Atlanta Police Office of Professional Standards to be interviewed about what happened at the raid.

"They are tired.  They're tired of being accused of something they didn't do," said Hammock.

Lawyer Dan Grossman represents the plaintiffs in a lawsuit over the raid.

"When we see their report, we'll know whether it's a good thing or a bad thing," said Grossman.

The botched raid led to the disbanding of the RED DOG drug unit that focused on the street-level market.
