Over 2 million unsafe toys blocked at US borders

By Marcy Williams

Washington, DC —

As parents head out to go toy shopping, the U.S. government intercepts unsafe toys at the border.

Inez Tenenbaum of the Consumer Product Safety Commission announces the CPSC and Customs and Border Protection have blocked more than 2 million unsafe toys from reaching U.S. kids this year.

"By seizing these dangerous toys and children's products at the port, those products remain off store shelves and out of the consumer's home," Tenenbaum says.

In 2011, more than 190 thousand children under the age of 15 wound up at the E.R. because of a toy-related injury.  Tenenbaum points out, that's actually down from 250 thousand in 2009.  She credits better risk assessment, which allows them to target suspect shipments.

"Over the past four years, [we] have stopped more than 8.5 million units of about 2400 different toys and children's products due to safety hazards," Tenenbaum explains.

Most toys today are made in China.
