Old IRS scam resurfaces

If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be with the IRS, please beware.  The phone call may be a scam that  has recently begun to resurface. The caller will demand payment, and then threaten jailtime if you don't agree to pay.

The call might seem to be legitimate, because the scam involves using a caller ID spoof , which will display  a legitimate in-state phone number when the calls come through. Common characteristics of this type of scam include:

  • Scammers using  fake names and IRS badge numbers.
  • Scammers that may be able to give out the last four digits of a victim's Social Security number.
  • Scammers that sometimes send bogus IRS emails to  victims to support their phone calls.

If you get a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS asking for money, you can report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at (800) 366-4484 or at the TIGTA complaint contact page.

If someone claiming to be from the IRS calls you and you believe you do owe taxes, call the IRS at (800) 829-1040. The employees can help with a payment issue if you have one.
