More older cars on the road

By Sabrina Gibbons

Atlanta —

A stubborn recession is resulting in more people driving their cars longer.

The average age of vehicles on the road today is now a record 11.1 years and it's not uncommon to have 200 thousand miles on them.

WSB auto and consumer advisor Adam Goldfein says cars are simply made better today than they were, say, in the 70's, "If you were to buy a car today, you would expect from an average life expectancy a minimum or more, and if you maintain your vehicle, it is not uncommon to get between two and three hundred thousand miles."

He says even car dealership are now selling cars with 100,000 miles or more on them; something that was unheard in the past.
