Pepsico plans to cut almost 9,000 jobs worldwide; about 3 percent of its workforce.
The company hopes to save $1.5 billion by 2014. It's trying to offset the higher cost of ingredients.
At the same time, Pepsi intends to step up advertising, especially in North America. Coca-Cola also intends to cut costs, but the Atlanta-based beverage giant did not mention lay-offs.
