Celebration cutbacks this summer

Washington, DC —

Americans celebrate the 4th of July on a budget this year.

Kathy Grannis of the National Retail Federation says 68 percent of Americans will be satisfied with a mid-week cook-out.

"Americans may have had a rough year; there are still a lot of Americans unemployed,"  she says.  "This is really the perfect type of holiday to simply kick back and have fun with family & friends."

Surveys by Visa and AAA confirm Americans will shell out less on the holiday this year, even if they are traveling.  About one in five will not celebrate at all.  Grannis acknowledges the Fourth is not one of their bigger retail holidays.  She anticipates the next consumer test will be back-to-school shopping.
