Opinions on gun control remain same

By Bob Coxe

Washington, DC —

The movie theater massacre in Colorado has at least one thing in common with previous high-profile shootings: it hasn't changed any minds about gun control.

The Pew Research Center's Michael Dimock says 47 percent of those they surveyed favor more control over gun ownership, while 46 percent are more concerned about gun rights. That’s about the same as after two earlier incidents.

“We tracked views about gun control before and after the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007; before and after the Tucson shootings a year and a half ago,” says Dimock.

And while some say these incidents are an indication of a dangerous level of violence in America, Dimock says, “Only a quarter said they thought that this was a broader problem.  Two-thirds said they thought it was just an isolated act of a troubled individual.”
