Marietta High School students head back to class today at the end of their winter break. While they have an armed school resource officer on campus, their principal strongly opposes the idea of arming teachers in the wake of the school shooting tragedy in Connecticut.

Principal Leigh Colburn said she doesn’t believe teachers should be armed guards.

“We need to leave that to the professionals,” she said. “The last thing we need are teachers who are not law enforcement personnel going around with guns.”

In an active shooter situation, Colburn said she worries that teachers with guns could become targets for police. And then there’s the issue of trying to secure guns on campus.

“That’s not a responsibility that I want,” said Colburn.
