Report: Marietta man threatened ex-wife before her murder

MARIETTA —

Records show the man charged with killing his ex-wife before fleeing the scene in Marietta over the weekend already faced aggravated stalking charges.

A criminal warrant from the Magistrate Court of Cobb County says John Kristofat, 58, threatened his 44-year-old ex-wife, Donna, several time in March of 2012. In addition to several threatening phone calls to her work, John Kristofat also sent e-mails asking her if she had ever been hit by a car going 140 mph, telling her to say goodbye to her children and saying their children would rather go to heaven with him than stay with her.

The warrant also says one of the Kristofats' teenaged sons found two poster boards tacked to trees in her front yard full of vulgar and sexual language. It says text messages sent to one of the sons' phones showed that Kristofat was the person that put those signs in the yard.  One of the children says he witnessed the incident between his parents that led to Donna Kristofat's death.

Police say Kristofat was last seen driving a brown Chevy Equinox with the license plate BUV 2635. He now faces charges of aggravated assault and murder.

Meanwhile, people who knew the family, like Paul Watts, say they are shocked by the murder. "I don't know what happened here and I'm horrified that two lives have been ruined. Well, the whole family has been ruined," said Paul Watts. Watts coached baseball with the suspect and said the couple was only recently divorced.

Cobb County Police ask anyone with information to call 770-499-3945.
