Man drowns after jumping from boat at Lake Allatoona

By Jay Black and Richard Sangster

A 23-year-old man is dead after drowning in Lake Allatoona this evening.

Nicholas Alexander was spending the day on the lake with his parents when he jumped off a rental boat at Red Top Mountain State Park, a spokesman with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources said.

Alexander was swimming to shore when he went under.

“People under estimate their swimming abilities,” DNR Sgt. Mike Barr told Channel 2 Action News.

Alexander’s body was found around 6:30 p.m., about 90 minutes after he went under. His body was found in about 30 feet of water.

“I knew something was bad when they put the stretcher up against a tree,” said Sharon Sheppard, who was also out on the lake with Alexander and his family.

Investigators still aren’t sure why Alexander went under. They say he was not drinking and they don’t think he got tangled up in debris under the water.

But he was not wearing a life jacket.

“It's the same thing you may put on when you drive a car,” said Sgt. Barr, “this is a safety device.”
