Youth football organization works to reduce injuries

By Bob Coxe

Atlanta, GA —

The country's oldest and biggest youth football organization is taking a big step toward reducing head injuries.  Pop Warner Football, where many boys learn the game, is taking the lead in trying to reduce the risk of concussions, which may set an example at higher levels.

Beginning this fall, the nation's oldest and largest youth football organization will limit contact to a third of practice time, and will ban full-speed, head-on blocking and tackling drills. Executive Director Jon Butler: "There are some old-school coaches who believe in a lot of contact, but more and more coaches have been reducing the amount of contact in practice."

That's where about two-thirds of head injuries occur. Concussion expert Chris Nowinski says it's a smart first step: "Set basic parameters of time, and then eventually of the sort of drills that we should be using on the field."

Hundreds of retired NFL players are suing the league over the treatment of head injuries.
