Atlanta —
Two witnesses connected with Rep. Tyrone Brooks (D-Atlanta) and the reenactments of the 1946 lynching of two black couples in Walton County testify before a grand jury as part of an apparent federal investigation of Brooks.
The longtime lawmaker has served as president of the Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials for the past two decades. An assistant U.S. district attorney confirms that GABEO is not being investigated for any wrongdoing.
Ron Brown, a deacon at First African Baptist Church in Monroe which hosts the reenactment of the Moore's Ford Bridge lynching, says he was asked about the finances of Brooks and the reenactment itself.
"Did anybody take any money, did anybody offer any money," he told reporters after giving his testimony.
Robert Howard, who also helps with the reenactments was asked about checks made out to Brooks.
"They asked me had I seen the check for $1,200 and a couple more checks... it's new to me," he says. "I've never seen any money period coming from anybody."
Howard says those involved with the reenactment usually end up spending their own money to pull it together.
The two men along with Brooks believe the investigation stems from the lawmaker's work to uncover those responsible for the lynching. Brooks believes the FBI is connected with the murders of the two couples.
"Whatever the accusations are, it's all connected to stopping this movement... we're not going to stop," he says.
